Our environmental protection program GoGreen is our way of ensuring a sustainable future for our planet. By the year 2050, we want to reduce our logistics-related emissions generated by our business to zero.
The Shared Value proposition – the idea that our contributions to society and the environment also make our business stronger – plays an important role in all of our environmental protection activities, which are anchored in our Group strategy Strategy 2020: Focus.Connect.Grow. One aspect of the “Connect” pillar is to develop environmentally-friendly logistics solutions and bring the Group’s divisions together under a unified approach to commercializing these solutions.
Our climate protection goals are in keeping with our Shared Value approach. As early as 2008 we became the first major logistics company to make a voluntary commitment to improving our carbon efficiency by 30% over the 2007 baseline by the year 2020. In our effort to reach this target, our environmental protection program GoGreen developed measures to improve the carbon efficiency of our air and road transport operations as well as that of our buildings and facilities. We achieved this goal in 2016, well ahead of schedule.
Already today many people base their buying decisions on sustainability criteria. In the future, green business models will take on an even larger and more important role. With its GoGreen Solutions, Deutsche Post DHL Group helps customers establish resource-efficient supply chains.
We offset greenhouse gas emissions by investing in high-quality climate protection projects that truly advance the cause for a better climate and healthier environment. All emissions calculations and offsets for the GoGreen program are verified annually by the independent auditing company SGS.
The key to developing efficiency improvement measures is knowing which emissions volumes are generated by which parts of the logistics chain. We calculate our greenhouse gas emissions based on widely-accepted international standards and work to continuously improve the quality of the data.
Relevant emissions for our climate protection goal include emissions generated by our own logistics-related activities, emissions attributed to the energy we purchase, and emissions generated by our transport partners, which is why our GoGreen standards apply to our subcontractors as well.
