Social commitment is important to our employees. The high rate of participation shows just how important social commitment is to our employees. By helping solve problems in their local communities, they not only make a contribution to society, but create a sense of community and teamwork that carries over into the workplace.
The groupwide Global Volunteer Day is a community outreach program focused on instilling the spirit of volunteerism among DPDHL Group employees, encouraging them to devote time and effort to create a positive impact in their communities. Employees are encouraged to organize activities that are aligned with Deutsche Post DHL Group's three Corporate Responsibility programs: GoGreen (protecting the environment), GoHelp (delivering help) and GoTeach (improving educational opportunity and employability).
Deutsche Post DHL Group launched Global Volunteer Day in 2008. By 2016, over 106,000 employees were involved in providing support to non-profit projects in their local communities as part of the GVD program, contributing more than 365,000 volunteer hours in more than 2,400 individual projects in 119 countries around the world. As an integral component of our Corporate Citizenship activities, Global Volunteer Day bundles our global volunteering and supports our sustainability strategy to serve the company's economic interests and those of our stakeholders' while balancing these with social and environmental needs.
Volunteerism has truly resonated among employees, demonstrated by the numerous other volunteer projects that take place throughout the year. Since 2013, all volunteering activities will be recognized and counted as GVD activities.
With the Living Responsibility Fund, we support employees who are engaged locally in an exemplary way on social or environmental matters on a sustained basis. Employees can submit their project to receive funding for their partner organisation. In 2016, 114 projects initiated by employees from 38 countries were selected for funding. 5,500 employees contributed approximately 50,000 hours to these projects. The Living Responsibility Fund donated €220,000 in project funding, which is transferred as a charitable donation directly to the participating non-profit organisations. The funding comprised €200,000 which is used for the Living Responsibility Fund every year and an additional €20,000 which was donated this year specifically for projects related to helping refugees.
Projects are selected for funding by a jury comprising representatives from all board departments. Financial support is limited to €4,000 per project and is determined based upon the number of hours of volunteer work performed by Deutsche Post DHL Group employees over the course of the application year.
When selecting projects, the Living Responsibility Fund looks for initiatives demonstrating continuity and sustainability. One example is a project in Germany which has already been granted funding three times. This year, around 20 employees worked more than a total of 600 hours for refugees arriving at the state registration authority in Bramsche, Germany. The project is about actively demonstrating a welcome culture. Employees assist with various campaigns such as fundraising activities, workshops and a large summer festival.
The "We Help Each Other" (WHEO) Fund was founded in 2010 after the earthquake in Haiti and is an officially registered charitable organization within Germany. Our employees can use the fund’s accounts to donate money to their colleagues who have fallen victim to natural disaster, enabling them to provide support quickly and easily.
